Third Graders recently celebrated the completion of a unit on the children's book, Because of Winn Dixie, with a trip (to Mrs. Turner's room) to the movies! They were also treated to such Southern delicacies as popcorn. egg sandwiches, marshmellows, pickles, and jolly ranchers. Thanks to our 2-3 team and parents for making this event one for the memory books!

Dale Jarrett comes to American Renaissance Elementary! On Monday, January 25th the famous race car driver, Dale Jarrett, came to our school and gave a special presentation on his journey to success. All students, K-5, listened as Mr. Jarrett explained his work as a professional driver and the many adventures he has encountered. Our students listened intently and asked some very provocative questions! Mr. Jarrett remarked that he had spoken to high school students who were not as polite and interested as our elementary students! Third grader, Will S., served as his famous uncle’s special escort and tour guide. Before the all-school presentation, several classes were treated to a surprise visit as Will introduced his friends and shared our school’s unique qualities. we all look forward to seeing our new friend, Dale Jarrett, on ESPN as racing season gets underway in the coming months!

Mid-Year Assessments

Mid year assessments: January and early February bring mid year assessments in reading and math skills for our students. We take time out to evaluate how our teaching strategies have improved students’ understanding of basic skills. Once assessments are completed, we regroup and identify specific needs regarding remediation or enrichment activities. Some students need a little more practice while others are ready to move forward. Our classroom teacher helpers and teacher associates assist in both language arts and math classes to ensure support for each level of need. Home school communication is particularly important during this period as our parent-teacher teams come together and discuss helpful strategies for reinforcing skills in both settings. Please contact your child’s teacher and arrange for a conference if you have any questions about you role in this process.

Tennis Anyone?

Statesville Recreation center tennis instuctors conducted a mini tennis camp with our fourth and fifth graders. Students practiced basic skills such as eye hand coordination, serving,
and how to hold the tennis racket. Obviously, some of our students are ready to take on the pros! If your child is interested in signing up for spring tennis lessons, please contact the recreation center for details.
